Treatment during Pregnancy

  • It is crucial to consult with a doctor before continuing your treatment plan during pregnancy

  • The FDA classifies all medications into categories based on if it is safe to take while pregnant. Medication guides typically come with prescription and non-prescription drugs and can tell you if the medication is safe for pregnant women. See more information about medication guides HERE

  • If your treatment is unsafe to take during pregnancy, it is important to discuss alternative plans with a doctor. There are always more options!

Outcomes

  • Between 50% and 80% of pregnant migraine patients experience a reduction in migraine attacks during their pregnancies

  • Some women can experience migraine for the first time during pregnancy

  • Others experience an increase in migraine symptoms when pregnant, especially during the first trimester

Planning Ahead

If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant soon:

  • Identify and avoid your triggers. This can be certain foods, smells, stressors, etc.

  • Prioritize sleep. Make a sleep schedule and follow it.

  • Stay hydrated. Consider electrolyte-rich fluids such as Pedialyte.

  • Have a treatment plan and a backup plan. Learn what medications and methods work for you, and which techniques you can continue throughout your pregnancy.
